ITS GIB ARNOLD
By Jeff
Reliable sources have informed me that the decision has been made and the new UH Basketball Coach will be Gib Arnold. I am told there will be a press conference to make the announcement later today and Arnold will be there. It appears that the Pump brothers and strong local Punahou support played a major part in the decision.
Not sure how long a deal it will be or the price. My guess is it will be between 3 and 5 years at 300 to 350 thousand dollars. Remember some say UH got burned by giving Coach Mac a five year deal when he had never been a Div 1 Head Coach.
Some local basketball folks are very happy with the choice, others not so happy. But my two cents is now that the decsion has been made, its time to pull together and support the new Coach as he and his staff ( i would be surprised if there are any holdovers) begin the task of getting committments in the few weeks before signing day.
Speaking of the former staff, we should all be wishing them well. There has been much written about Bob, but both Jackson and Aran have served the University and the basketball program with distinction. Not only on the court, but off it as well. At a time when too many folks simply look at success as wins and loses, character and an honest program sometimes are forgotten.

On March 19 at 9:58 am, diehard fan predicted that it looked like the new coach would be Gib (or Gig, but not Gibson ). Note that in the last two years, USC hasn't been that good in the Pac 10, but did win the tournament in 08-09.
In the future, Donovan should consider Bobby Nash after Bobby gets some coaching experience, since his father had a better record than Frank Arnold. Also consider Cody von Appen for football coach, if he gets some coaching experience, as Cody was a very good three sport player at Kalaheo. Note his father had some good recruits such as Dan Robinson, Jeff Ulbrich, and Klemm, Forney, Nate Jackson, Randall Okimoto played at that time too. He just didn't find the winning chemistry in three years.

I really like to see Eran Ganot retained. In listening to interviews with him, he seems like a really smart, up and coming coach. Based on what you're saying that doesn't seem likely.

Yes Jeff we would like to hear your real opinion about the hire. I was hoping K. Smith, but I think Arnold will do well. I also think no former staff should be retained, we should start with a clean slate.

Bob Nash may not have been the greatest coach but if he was in the position of having to recruit academically sound players rather than the
best athletes, he can be partially excused for his bad record.
In this day and age, it is very difficult to win when you can't get the best recruits and quite often the best recruits are not too strong academically.
There is an anecdotal story about USC football's decline some years ago when they raised their academic standards. Supposedly things didn't get back to normal until they relaxed them again or so the story goes.
In any event, hats off to Bob Nash for being a good man and his long years of service to UH. Not everyone is cut out to be a head coach but
for quality of character, I'll give Nash a big thumbs up.

Had to be a close one. In the end, though, Arnold is more of what JD wanted-- first, Hands on recruiter, second "exciting" offense in JD's terms-- an uptempo and set offense (whic I don't like), with pressure D.
Smith was more of a basketball mind, although Arnold also did scouting and game planning like Smith. Smith ran a slower, deliberate offense to run the shot clock (which I like) when he was at St. Mary's and when he was offensive coordinator at Air Force. But offensively he was from the same school as Nash and Riley. Nash was a basketball mind kind of guy and Smith was even more so. Arnold more of a coach.

I think this is a good hire! Looks like Coach Arnold has what it takes, only time will tell. Good job! Coach Nash, Mahalo for all you have done for this University. Class act!

Pump Brothers played a role? Dat makes this a questionable pick. Do they even know if the basketball is stuffed or inflated? Dey know how to scalp tickets and play politics. Dey don't know X's and O's. Who do you think has been advising their buddy Howland? Pushing him to take weak recruits? Incredible that a state university, which requires that job candidates for head coaching and assistant coaching jobs have at least their bachelor of arts degrees, is taking advice from a pair of controversial twins, who never graduated from college. Even more incredible is that they are paying their company a consulting fee. Lots of wild rumors about this hire.
