lay gone; is williams next?
By Jeff
the announcement today that Jeremy Lay will be leaving the program should have come as no surprise to folks who read this blog. Lay's attitude both on and off the court, in my view, was disruptive and his basketball skills were not as advertised. He was a poor ball handler, made poor decisions, and was a woeful outside shooter. His " decision" to leave his team with seven games left and, with the team fighting to make the playoffs. and with his coaches jobs on the line, is still not understandable. The " hernia" issue, which he claimed was a problem all year, did not appear to me to have been aggravated as the season progressed, and his lack of committment to his team-mates was clear to this observer.
Now the question is will Dwain Williams be back. Frankly, i wouldn't want him back. His decision to leave the team for several games to " mourn" the death of his cousin, probably cost the team a win or two. It left the team with only one healthy point guard. I can understand a player who misses a game or two to travel to the mainland for a funeral. But Williams not only didn't leave town, he didn't even bother to show up to support his team-mates for several weeks. I have been around basketball for almost four decades. I have never seen anything like this and my criticism of the coaches was that he was " allowed" to get away with this for weeks before being suspended.
Its time to clear the decks. yes i know guards are needed and who knows whether Arnold will find any. But keeping players like these two is not the answer. I guess Williams could " rehabilitate" himself with a new coaching staff. But I don't think its possible. Williams had other issues which never became public, and if i was a returning UH player, i wouldn't want him as my team-mate.

Other issues? If you have something to report, do so. If not stop with the enuendo.

100% agree.
its what a little birdie or two told me as well about both. in fact, perhaps dwain the pain was more of a problem than lay.
i was surprised that nash kept him around since dwain was a thorn since day one missing classes and practices one after another.

While I agree with the conclusions, I would also urge you to stop beating around the bush and report the facts on Williams.

The 68 team format proposed today is much better than a watered-down ninety-six team event. It keeps truly marginal teams (like UNC this year) who really should have no opportunity to compete for a national title from being in the tournament. This year, I bet UNC could have been in the field of ninety-six.

Remember the old adage " one rotten apple" ruins the whole barrel. He showed his true colors and they wern't green and white. Let DW go!

You were knocking Lay on the broadcasts, but later backed off some near the end when you saw some things maybe like that he was a pretty quick defender who could make some key steals etc. which he also did early in the season. He had some moments shooting early on and a few later and his free throw shooting was very good. So which recent players lived up to their advertisements ?
He could handle the ball reasonably well with an avg. of 2 turnovers per game and was playing 40 minutes for some of the games near the end but maybe he argued with the coaches some earlier in the season ? If he did have a hernia, that showed commitment to have played that long with it. He seemed to be a better ball handler and defender than Williams.

I agree that Williams should be let go! William's behaviors prior to, during, and after the two suspensions clearly indicates a "me first", "me only" attitude. Should Williams be provided another chance with different coaches and system ... I don't think so! Gib will already have his hands full with introducing a new system, filling up the arena, having new/old teamates mesh as one unit, and gaining the trust of the people who questioned his hiring.

To me, it looks like Williams is staying. We have much youth coming in next year as the recruits look promising. However, we are still very thin at guard.
I don't know what the other problems with Williams are. If Gib can get a good guard during this recruiting season, Williams will probably go.
