COMINGS AND GOINGS
By Jeff
You have to be concerned about the news that two players have decided to leave the program in early December. The decisions by Jordan Coleman and Anthony Salter to transfer is not a good sign, regardless of the reasons. Lack of playing time is the stated reason in both cases, but heck, the team has only played 7 games. You have to ask yourself why were these guys brought in in the first place? Were they promised something that didnt happen ( like playing time/). Did they come with baggage that should have caused the staff not to recruit them even as they moved quickly to fill out the team. Is it homesickness? Whatever it is, you hate to see recruits give up on the program so soon.
In Salter's case, here is a guy that came out of Junior College as the top JUCO point gurad and number 3 prospect overall by Rivals. Could they have been so wrong? And in Coleman's case, as a true freshman, he could not have expected much more playing time with Hiram and Bobby Miles ahead of him. Its not like either of these guys have NBA potential and were expected to play one year and then turn pro.
So what a few weeks ago looked like a 12 man squad with everybody getting some minutes, is, with the injury to Amis and these defections, a 9 man squad with little depth in the backcourt. I dont know the reasons why these guys are gone, but its very unusual to lose two first year players after 7 games.
On the bright side, the Bows have announced that Jeremiah Ostrowski, a former all state basketball player at Punahou, will join the team and add some depth to the backcourt for the WAC season. Since his football career has not exactly taken off, maybe the basketball court is where he belongs

Jordan should have been given more playing time unless Gib thought he wasn't good enough yet. Salter should also been given more playing time but maybe Gib thought he wasn't playing near his potential yet. He had said earlier that Salter wasn't yet where he was before his injury.

...also 'sounds like' AAU coaches are feeding 'stories' of other or 'better' options -- "i can get you immediate playing time here or there" -- the math doesn't make sense to me for a JC recruit like Salter --- sounds like he may end up trading two seasons for one (? or one and a half and where's 'better' when you can't do anything positive "Today": Next semester ? January ? NOT in D-1)
... THIS RANKS (smacks and smells of the logic & ego) that resulted in Carl English giving up his senior year ...
perhaps part of the (hopefully short-term ) problem is that the long-term trust in THIS Staff wasn't (yet) developed -- quick turn-around times, last-minute recruit, recruit by previous staff ...
longer-term: AAU coaches "shopping around" former players (as Joston may have also alluded to...) ... Cam Newton syndrome?
