The Answer Man
By Jeff
several of you have posed questions to me over the past few days so here are my responses.
1. are the referees " poor"? Hard to generalize. So far , over-all, they have been ok. I thought they did a poor job on Maui, but Hiram's injury was not the result of officiating.
2. Can we survive without Hiram? Not for long. Make no mistake about it, this team will lose more than they win if Hiram is out for long. Yes, Bobby Miles is proving to be a competent back-up, but without Hiram, and add Amis to the mix, it will be a long season.
3. Is this year's offense better than last years? Too early to tell. Wait until the competition improves. With Hiram and Bill, the answer is probably yes. , Better three point shooters and rebounders. Still way too many turn-overs.
Is the team more motivated than last year? I say definitely yes. New Coach. lots of young and hungry new players.
Is Hiram the best PG we have? See above.
4. Is the defense better than last year? Again too early to tell. Certainly rebounding better. Not quite sure we have the depth to really pressure the ball. Zones look better so far.
5.How good is Kurtz? A work in progress. Gives you some good minutes. Still too foul prone. Hands are not great. Gets up and down the floor well. Better than last year. Still a back-up.
6. Can Barnes and Zane handle the ball if Hiram is out for long? They are not really strong ball handlers. They are primarily shooters. They are 2 guards, but one of them may have to play at back-up PG if Hiram out for long. And then is always Miah once football ends this week.
Keep the questions and opinions coming. No show this week because of the Tournament. I will provide my thoughts on who will win and why on tomorrow.

With all the power outages at certain malls, this tourney might be the place to be this weekend, bwwwwaaaahhaha.
I pick either Baylor or Butler to take the tourney. And if Rainbow Warriors take it all, I'll be glad I'm wrong
.
And I'm gonna say it . . . MEEERRRRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY (and b-ball fans
)

Hey Jeff
How would you assess the job Coach Arnold has done so far this year?

Hawaii, with only eight players tentatively that will be suited for playing time, will definitely be at a handicap but, one must admit, that the coaching and players that Hawaii has is way better than what we had in previous years. Coach Arnold is a very good tactitian but with a dearth of players it will be difficult to win against Florida State and hopefully we will get back Amis and Thompson for the WAC games.
The playing time that the freshman will have accumulated will be invaluable for the next three years and that is what we must build on but their intensity, perseverance, and character will be tested this season esp. in this tournament. Nothing more and nothing less.

Issac, a little too early to tell. He did a solid job in recruiting, but two players have left. On the court, the loss of Bill Amis and maybe Hiram has definitely hurt. Gib is great with the public, and has assembled a good staff. There is renewed excitement in the community, although folks need to temper their expectations after a solid start since the competition gets much tougher.
