Bows-Dons
By Jeff
Saturday nights second round game should be far more competitive than Tuesday's win over Portland. USF finished third in the WCC, behind Gonzaga and St. Mary's with a conference record of 10-4. They beat Gonzaga once and lost by only 4 to Gonzaga in the semi-finals of the WCC Tournament. They are led by two all conference guards in Mike Williams and Rashad Green, who average almost 27 ppg. Angeko Caloiaro is their most talented inside player averaging almost 11 points and 7 rebounds per game.
USF disposed of Idaho in their first round game, and as you know, Hawaii lost to Idaho twice. Neither game was close. But the big difference tomorrow night may well be that the game is here. While Hawaii has been sleeping in their own beds and practicing on their regular schedule, the Dons had to travel across the Pacific on short notice to play this game.
For Hawaii, they will again be short-handed in the back court and will need to rely on Miah to play close to 40 minutes. But unlike Portland, who lost their best guard three weeks ago and really had no one who could compete with Miah, USF w2ill not have that problem. So once again, i look for Bill Amis and Zane Johnson to carry the team to a victory and a third round game either against Air Force here next week or at Santa Clara ( another WCC team).
As i write this, dont know if the game will be televised. Of course, we will be carrying it live on ESPN 1420 at 6:40. Whether it gets televised or not, I expect a large crowd. At least 6 to 7 thousand. If its less, you have to question this community's dedication and support of big-time college basketball

The University of Hawaii announced that its second-round Collegeinsider.com Postseason Tournament basketball game with San Francisco tomorrow night will be shown on Oceanic Time Warner Cable's OC 16 channel.
Athletic director Jim Donovan made the announcement after about 4,000 tickets had been sold as of this morning for the 7 p.m. game.
Donovan said UH's break-even point was an estimated $57,500 in ticket revenue and UH had topped $60,000 this morning. He said Oceanic will pay $7,500 for the TV rights.
Oceanic was given the go-ahead to show Tuesday night's first-round victory over Portland after a $58,000 mark had been met.
Under terms of its agreement with the Boston-based CIT, UH underwrites travel, hotel and per diem expenses for visiting teams and pays a fee to the tournament. UH keeps tickets, TV, concession and parking revenues.

The game should be broadcast only to outer islands, and on Oahu if it's a sellout, we need the fans in the seats, the TEAM needs a packed , and loud house ,they deserve and now let's all show up and support our Warriors.

Leahys? If you've ever seen locally-broadcast sports events in other cities and states, you will wonder why and how the Leahys have so much presence and longstanding. Heck, even that HPU basketball play by play guy is better than this family sports broadcast dynasty. I dunno what is so good about Leahys voices, looks and commentary. GOOD 0C16 got the new rights and are having others do the broadcast. Sometimes I cannot decipher what Wilson is saying sometimes as well. I seen kanoa leahy do the diamond head tournament basketball on ESPN seems he argues and tries to overtake the real ESPN side broadcasters words but haha ESPN got back and showed a video of kanoa singing for a ch2 news story or such.
Portnoy would tell you that he himself has a face for radio, but he is very knowledgable in basketball 0C16 should have him do the UH men basketball broadcast on their network.

Only thing about 0C16, based on initial evidence of their ability to do UH men's basketball broadcasts, is they gotta get rid if that sponsor bedsheet in the background when they're interviewing coaches and players at the end of the game; and get those WWII-era looking monitors out of camera range. Makes it all look, I dunno, low budget. Definitely NOT very Stan Sheriffian.
Think Portnoy should do broadcasts! Would seriously be the best.
