8 plus 5 minus 1 plus? minus?

ok, so i didnt see the barnes departure coming ( although i found out about it very early today). He sets the freshman record for three's and now he's gone. Is he leaving because he"s homesick? wants to play closer to home? or because other than the ability to shoot the three, he didnt have the other skills necessary to play 2G?

Surprised some of you are on me for not picking correctly the barnes departure. At least i raised the issue of too many players and not enough scholarships. Who else did?

I dont think we have seen the end of players leaving. its simple math. That and the matter of are there " better" players out there than the players we have now? There are still two reported verbal committments and other names are in the recruting rumor mill.

There are two schools of thought about the philosophy of rotating scholarships. One school believes you get the best players you can and if someone already here has to go, so be it. The other is if you sign someone, you stick with them unless they prove to be a discipline or academic problem.

Frankly, most big time programs essentially believe in the former. Its not new to Hawaii, just maybe a little bit more evident right now. You tend to see it more when a new staff comes in late and has to recruit late, like UH last year. You expect less of this after two recruting classes, when you have a full year to find the " right" players and have the opportunity to cultivate high school juniors.

So stay tuned. Math class is still in session.

i agree with you that a program that is far from being developed needs to have the right players.

some will leave by their own accord whatever the reason they give for their departure.
some may not cut it in the classroom. college is not for everyone.
some will not fit in and will be asked to exit the back door.

and for these reasons student/athletes will be entering and leaving via the old sears department store swinging door. it is a part of every sport in the college sports arena.

i believe as you do that after this recruit year there will less of this in and out stuff. for one, the gibber will as you say get the kids he feels will fit in. i am sure that the gibber is astute enough to know that you can't be cutting bait too often as this raises a red flag to future recruits who would consider his program.

this could be the last big class for this program, thereafter, we'll see 3-4 new recruits per year.

sometimes you got to do the tough things to build a program. on paper, next year's team is brimming with enough talent to go 2-3 deep and if they all buy in to the team concept...watch out.

(now let's get the contract and the extension signed off.)

    ...nuff said!

Jeff. Thanks for keeping your blog going during this recruiting period. One point, though. You asked who else broached the topic of too many commits and not enough scholarships? Dayton Morinaga did, in a more informed way (changes on the way ...), on his warriorinsider.com blog. But don't feel bad; he's a journalist by trade. Keep up the good work.

  3. UHDODGER:

Barnes is a surprise, I thought he really hustled when he played and would be able to grow more adept to find shots better in this offence. This is disappointing to me when he was hot in those two first games of the year it was an awesome experience, I thought we had the next Iowa's Kingsberry on our hands. Looking forward to next year though, and keep us posted Jeff.

  4. shoes2:

How does this impact future scholarships? Doesn't the migration of players cost us scholarships in the outer years because our graduation rates continue to fall? Losing 3 in one year seems like it would be painful later.

  5. Kaneohe97:

I was surprised to hear Barnes leaving too but I don't think it will be such a huge impact as some people are making it. Is it just me or was Barnes inconsistent with making 3's? Yes, he made the record for most 3's by a freshman but when all you do is jack up 3's that record is not super impressive. I would rather have a 2 guard who can create his own shot, play solid defense, and pass well with a descent 3 ball than a 2 guard who mainly shoots 3's.

  6. diehard fan:

Too bad about Barnes, he was one of the few with a "charisma" about him.

  7. Warriorbacker:

Do not worry about APR, the NCAA has relaxed about that rule, as long as the kids are leaving in good academic standing, I know Coleman and Bo for sure
( not sure about Salter) UH will be okay.

  8. kendall:

The one thing I will never forget about Barnes is when he failed to box out that Cal Poly guy who got the tip-in to beat Hawaii. That was his guy to box out but he was too focused on the shot.

I know it's bad of me, but I guess it's easier to remember the bad things than the good.

Bo was a good student and excellent shooter, he will be missed more so for his off court presence.

    Jeff,

Here's the tough thing. Gib was hired last march and only had a month to fill out his roster. That's tough so I think he had to sign some real diamonds in the rough and maybe some tweeners to fill out the roster.

But now with a year to recruit the kind of players he wants to run his system he is getting some real good athletes, impact guys that can take Hawaii Basketball to the next level he has found a bunch of great talents, like Odunsi, CJ Blackwell, Michael Harvey, etc. With so much out there and looking at what he has on the current roster I can definitely see only 5 guys returning from last year's squad.

    Kendall

jeff p wow bo knows to get out who knows i thought josten or bobby or brumfield would leave but bo? i hope he is happier so now how would u rate last years group now jeff p? looks like this years is another top one? what does jackson think he really knows this business of recruiting !!!Too bad u can't have one more show with gib on the radio so i anybody else leaving?

  11. pali:

i'll miss bo. i loved to yell "bo!!!" every time he set-up for a three. i was looking forward to doing that for three more years. bo will always be a bow!

  12. pali:

bo will always be a bow!

  13. warriorsun:

i cant argue with bo's departure or the others. they didnt fit into arnold's scheme. look, i'd rather have a coach self-correct his errors than have to bear listening to excuses for another five years. the one-year scholarship rule is legit, so it's arnold's option to use it.
why not? it's his okole in the sling. i just wish donovan would be as select w the wahine bb program. how much longer do fans need to be tortured by a bad choice?

  14. mctruck:

    Jeff,

very keen observation and I heartily agree with your thoughts; that being said...why does your paper need a wet behind the ears reporter like mcinnes???, did I spell it right??, whatevers!!
